Bike tour Autumn in Tuscany, Italy

Val d'Orcia

This year our Italian route goes through the famous valley of the Orcia river (Val d'Orcia). For its beauty Val d'Orcia was added to the UNESCO list of World Cultural Landscapes. Cycling part starts in Pienza, rebuilt as an "ideal town" in the 15th century. The historic center of Pienza is the UNESCO World Heritage Site. In Montalcino we will try the most prestigious Italian wine - Brunello di Montalcino. A considerable part of our tour goes along the Mediterranean coast (Maremma).

Program of the bike tour

Day 1.

Arrival to Pisa. Transfer to Pienza. Pienza is one of the best examples of High Renaissance architecture. The town has been extremely well preserved. Group dinner.

Day 2. 32 km, 650 mt of climbing

Cycling to Montalcino. Stop in Bagno Vignoni (thermal baths). In Bagno Vignoni we can use a thermal bath that is free (tepid water, not hot) or we can pay to use a hotel thermal bath (30 Euro per person including towel and bathing cap). Montalcino is home of one of Italy’s best red wines, the Brunello. The town is very pretty and sits high on a ridge. We visit the Fortress/Castle of Montalcino and have a guided wine tasting at the Fortress.

Day 3. 62 km, 515 mt

Cycling to Grossetto. Tour the olive oil mill/factory in Arcille. Grossetto is a beautiful town with a walled in Medieval center. Our hotel is in the historic center.

Day 4. 47 km, 485 mt

Cycling to Massa Marittima. Optional visit to the Accesa Lake. If the weather is warm we can swim in this lake. Massa Marittima is a coastal hill town with 13th and 14th century walls and fortifications. The town is beautiful and not heavily touristed.

Day 5. 38 km, 350 mt

Cycling to Campiglia Marittima. Tour and wine tasting at the Petra Winery. Campiglia is a small charming coastal hill town. It has a wall, a castle and few tourists. Optional ride to Baratti beach (30 km, 235 mt of climbing). Baratti beach is one of the prettiest beaches in Tuscany.

Day 6. 48 km, 420 mt

Cycling to Donoratico. This ride goes through two walled Medieval towns (Sassetta and Suvereto). Our hotel is right on the beach. Farewell dinner.

Day 7. 62 km, 515 mt (Add-on option)

Cycling to Quercianella. Cycle a Wine Road to one of the most prestigious wine making areas in Italy, Bolgheri. Visit the village of Bolgheri. Later ride to Quercianella a small seaside town with a pebble beach. Our hotel is located just above the rocky beach.
